During Stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes a huge crash involving over 30 riders happened in the middle of the peloton with one rider being taken away in an ambulance.

The crash occurred with about 44.8 km or just shy of 28 miles left in the stage. It’s hard to determine what the exact cause of the crash was, but cyclist Tiffany Cromwell told VeloNews, “That’s long stages. People lose their concentration and then touch wheels and half the bunch goes down.”

Emma Norsgaard, who rides for Moviestar abandoned the stage. Her team posted to Instagram, “Cycling has shown us its bad side on stage five of the Tour de France Femmes, as Emma Norsgaard sustained a crash which forced her to abandon.”

The team added, “The 23-year-old Danish rider hit her head, neck and left shoulder into a pile-up and had to be transferred to a hospital in Épinal, where examinations are were carried out this evening. We’ll update this post when results are confirmed.”

Team SD Workx detailed that their rider Chantal van den Broek-Blaak required medical assistance.

Video shows her receiving that medical attention while she continued cycling after getting back on her bike following the wreck.

More footage from GCN Racing revealed audio from Team SDWorkx where Chantal van den Broek-Blaak can be heard saying, “My elbows bleeding a lot.”

The Team responded, “Chantal, the medical car is bery busy with people who cannot stand up. So we are on the way. Okay?” She responded, “Yeah, this can go later. No problem.”

Lorena Wiebes of Team DSM won the stage in a sprint against Elisa Balsamo and current Tour leader Marianne Vos.
