Busch was injured during a hard wreck while qualifying at Pocono back in July.

During his qualifying run, Busch spun off of turn three with his rear end slamming into the outside wall. The car then spun and his front end made contact with the outside wall.

Following the wreck, Busch revealed he was suffering from “concussion-like symptoms.” He wrote on Twitter, ” “NASCAR has done a great job of putting the drivers’ health before competition and I respect the decision they have made. I’m still having concussion-like symptoms from yesterday’s impact in qualifying.”

Busch is still suffering from those symptoms and has not been cleared by NASCAR. He announced he would miss the playoffs writing on Twitter, “As much as I wanted and hoped to be able to get back in the No. 45 car to make a playoff run with our team, it’s still not the right time for me. In addition to not being cleared to return to racing I know that I am not ready to be back in the car.”

“I respect the sport of NASCAR, my fellow drivers and the fans too much to take up a playoff spot if I know I can’t compete for a championship this season,” he continued. “The decision was not an easy one, but I know it is the right thing to do.”

He concluded, “I will continue to take time to heal and strengthen as I prepare to be back in the car, and will do all I can to help 23XI continue the success we have had this season.”

Not only will Busch be missing the beginning of the playoffs, but his team, 23XI Racing, also announced they would withdraw their medical waiver to allow him to be eligible to compete in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

The team announced in a press statement, “The decision will also result in the team withdrawing the medical waiver that was requested for Busch to remain eligible for the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, should he have been cleared to return to competition in time.”

23XI team president Steve Lauletta said, “Although Kurt will not be competing for a championship this season, he will continue to play a vital role in the organization as he works with our competition group to keep improving and strengthening the team.”

23XI Racing announced that Ty Gibbs will continue to fill in for Busch. Gibbs took over the No. 45 23XI Racing Toyota Camry at Pocono and has filled in for him in subsequent races. At Pocono, Gibbs finished 16th. He followed that up with a 17th place finish at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course. He then posted a 10th place finish at Michigan International Speedway.

Gibbs had an engine failure at Richmond Raceway and he finished dead last in 36th place. Most recently he finished in 26th at Watkins Glen.

Gibbs reacted to the news that he would continue to drive for Busch writing on Twitter, “My prayers continue to be with Kurt. It’s tough that he’s going to miss the start of the playoffs, but I’ll do the best job I can filling in for him as long as I’m asked to.”

“I know Kurt will be our biggest supporter,” he continued. “I appreciate Michael [Jordan] and Denny [Hamlin] giving me the opportunity to fill in and hopefully we can continue to do well as we compete for the Cup Owner’s Championship for 23XI Racing.”

“My thoughts are with Kurt as he recovers, and I know will continue to do everything in his power to get better,” he concluded.

FOX Sports analyst Bob Pockrass explains that Busch withdrawing his waiver means that two playoffs spots are now up for grabs at Daytona instead of one.

“That leaves two spots available at Daytona this weekend. Definitely one on points and then one for either a new winner or on points,” he explained. “So either Ryan Blaney or Martin Truex Jr. would be in if there is no new winner. If one of them wins, the other would in. And if there is a new winner then it comes down to Blaney and Truex on points.”

“Blaney currently leads Truex by 25 points. So Blaney could potentially even clinch during the stages if he can finish with 11 more stage points than Truex. Blaney just needs 31 points total to clinch a spot. That would be a sixth place finish with no stage points,” Pockrass elaborated.
