Former Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade defended his decision to mutilate his son after his ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches-Wade filed legal papers to block Wade from legally changing their son’s name and gender.

Wade filed to legally change their son’s name from Zion to Zaya back in August with the documents purportedly explaining the reasoning for the change is “to confirm with gender identity.”
That petition to change Zion’s name was countered by Funches-Wade who claimed in her legal documents that Wade informed her “that a lot of money had already been made and that additional money will be made in relation to our child’s name and gender issue.”
She continued, “[Wade] told me that he intended to make our child very famous due to the name and gender issue and also informed me that there would be endorsements/contracts associated therewith.”

She further asserted, “Given [Wade’s] high-profile status as a professional athlete, our children’s lives have been highly publicized. [Wade] has appeared on national television shows and in media reports regarding our child’s name and gender change.”
“I am concerned that our child is being commercialized at a young age and also of the uncontrollable consequences of media exposure i.e. cyber bullying, statements and/or pictures taken out of context of our child, and unwanted spotlight focused on our child,” Funches-Wade declared.

In response to this legal filing by Funches-Wade, Wade took to Instagram where he called into question her lack of parenting as well as her religious beliefs.
Wade wrote, “Since this must be the new way of parenting, I guess I have to address these allegations here, which is a damn shame. While I’m on a life-changing trip in our motherland, Africa, I’ve received a social media post about me forcing our 15 year old child to be someone she’s not and to do something against her will. These are serious and harmful allegations that have hurt our children.”
He continued, “While none us are surprised by Siohvaugh’s attempt to fight Zaya’s identity and her unwavering attempt to drag my name through the mud, I’m very disappointed that she continuously find ways of centering herself and HER needs, without regard to her children.”
“This report came out while Zaya was in class,” Wade wrote. “This is a kid who has maintained a 4.0 GPA in honors classes while navigating all this unsolicited and harmful attention and debates about her gender and sexuality from those who are committed to not listening to her, much less even knowing her!”

“Siohvaughn tried a similar attempt over a decade ago (with equally damaging lies and causing irreparable harm to her children) and 13 lawyers later, I was awarded sole custody of our two kids as an active NBA player! All I ever wanted was to have my parenting time uninterrupted, as I knew that it would be a very difficult time for our kids to navigate their new normal.”
Wade then accused, “So instead of actually trying to co-parent over the years, she’s left her home to see more lawyers and has taken the time to talk to more lawyers since I filed for divorce, than she’s left her home to actually see or have truly spoke and LISTENED to Zaya over all these years.”
Next, he wrote, “I’ve given her the opportunity to reach out to Zaya’s teachers, doctors, and therapist over the years and even meet her friends, so she could get her own understanding of our child’s needs for her LIFE! She won’t do it! She has not been to a school, recital, graduation, school dance, play date, practice parent teacher conference etc and Zaya has given her every opportunity to try to get to know her. She won’t do it!”

He then took a shot at Funches-Wade’s Christian beliefs, “As a woman who claims to be a ‘good Christian mother, I’ve yet to see her make any sacrifice or effort to leave her own home to participate in her children’s lived in over a decade. Zaya is not the same 3 year child anymore and she’s screaming that to the world but most importantly to her Mother!”
“No one in our house would ever force Zaya or any of our children to do anything against their will, much less force an identity on them. This isn’t a game for my family and definitely not Zaya. This is her life! All the while my wife and our village has been her rock in helping her pick up the pieces after heartbreak after heartbreak.”
“Siohvvaughn has decided to pretty much be an absent parent to Zaya ALL ON HER OWN,” he charged. “As men, we get a bad rep for not showing up and being absentee fathers, well that’s not the case here because I’m ten toes down and I’m still going thru the BS!”
“I will not sit on my hands this time and allow her to make a mockery of my dedication to my family. The high road has run out of real estate. My lawyer will be in contact and best of luck to the 14th lawyer as they try to unravel this book of lies that’s been sold to them,” he conluded.

Regardless of whether or not Funches-Wade is good parent or a practicing Christian as Wade accuses, what Wade is doing is morally wrong and clearly shows he’s a terrible parent.
Bishop Michael Burbidge of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington explains in A Catechesis on the Human Person and Gender Ideology, “We know from biology that a person’s sex is genetically determined at conception and present in every cell of the body. Because the body tells us about ourselves, our biological sex does in fact indicate our inalienable identity as male or female. Thus, so-called ‘transitioning’ might change a person’s appearance and physical traits (hormones, breasts, genitalia, etc.) but does not in fact change the truth of the person’s identity as male or female, a truth reflected in every cell of the body. Indeed, no amount of ‘masculinizing’ or ‘feminizing’ hormones or surgery can make a man into a woman, or a woman into a man.”
It’s clear that no matter what Wade or Zion believes, a man cannot turn into a woman just like a woman cannot turn into a man. It is impossible.

In a later section in the article, Bishop Burbidge also advises, “In the case of gender dysphoria, this means recognizing that happiness and peace will not be found in rejecting the truth of the human person and the human body.”
“Thus parents must resist simplistic solutions presented by advocates of gender ideology and strive to discover and address the real reasons for their children’s pain and unhappiness,” he instructs. “They should seek out trustworthy clinicians for sound counsel.”
He also declares, “Under no circumstances should parents seek ‘gender-affirming’ therapy for their children, as it is fundamentally incompatible with the truth of the human person. They should not seek, encourage, or approve any counseling or medical procedures that would confirm mistaken understandings of human sexuality and identity, or lead to (often irreversible) bodily mutilation.
His Excellency makes clear, “Trusting God, parents need to be confident that a child’s ultimate happiness lies in accepting the body as God’s gift and discovering his or her true identity as a son or daughter of God.”
