The United States Men’s National Team coach Gregg Berhalter punted on political questions during a press conference ahead of the team’s World Cup match against Iran despite earlier this month actively engaging in promoting LGBTQ politics at the soccer tournament.

According to USA Today Sports columnist Nancy Armour, Berhalter was asked several questions by Iranian media concerning U.S. politics. She reports that one journalist asked “why he hasn’t asked US gov’t to remove a Naval ship from around Iran.”

Armour also reported that Berhalter was “asked about US immigration policies and why people with Iranian passports are subjected to restrictions on visiting states.” To this Armour says that Berhalter replied, “I don’t know enough about politics, I’m a soccer coach.”

However, Berhalter had a wildly different answer when it came to promoting LGBTQ politics less than two weeks ago ahead of the World Cup.

Berhalter addressed rainbow colors being displayed instead of the traditional red, white, and blue on the team’s crest saying, “We’ve been talking to the team for the last 18 months about Qatar, about some social issues in Qatar, and we think it’s important. I think that when we are on the world stage and in a venue like Qatar it’s important to bring awareness to these issues.”

He continued, “And that’s what ‘Be The Change’ is about. It’s not just stateside that we want to bring attention to social issues. It’s also abroad. And we recognize that Qatar has made strides, and there has been a ton of progress, but there’s still some work to do.”

“‘Be The Change’ basically represents everyone’s individual opportunity to make change and to have change start with them. So I think it is appropriate that we have it here as well,” he concluded.

Not only did Berhalter embrace the promotion of LGBTQ politics through their ‘Be The Change’ campaign, but he also endorsed the team’s anti-second amendment political activities.

Back in June, the USMNT shared an open letter to Congress calling on elected officials to “support stronger gun laws.”

Berhalter supported the letter saying, “First of all, starting outside of soccer, just really proud of the entire group today for the letter that was sent to everyone in Congress, calling on them to action. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in our little world and what we’re doing and then you forget about what’s happening in the outside world, but this group certainly didn’t do that.”

He added, “It’s good that this group is asking for action and asking people to make change and ‘Be The Change’ is something that we’ve been part of for a while now and this is just applying it in another area.”

“So really proud of the group,” he reiterated.

Strange that he knew enough about politics to make statements about pushing the LGBTQ and anti-Second Amendment ,agendas but when confronted about US immigration policy he’s just a soccer coach.
