Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones shares why his team traded for QB Trey Lance | WFAA

Jerry Jones pulled the trigger on a trade for former 49ers first-round draft pick Trey Lance late on Friday night, and in what seems like yet another case of ‘Jerry being Jerry’, the 80-year-old Dallas Cowboys owner didn’t even bother telling his head coach Mike McCarthy, or anyone else for that matter, that he was going to make the move.

If a lot of untapped potential is what Jerry Jones was looking for, then he may have found it in Trey Lance, who was the third overall pick by San Francisco in the 2021 NFL Draft. Despite coming from a small school in North Dakota State, he was highly regarded due to his prototypical size (6’4″, 225 lbs) and outstanding athleticism

Now, after playing just five competitive quarters of football, Lance went from being the team’s quarterback of the future to being shipped away from the Bay. Instead, coach Kyle Shanahan favors 2022 Cinderella Man, Brock Purdy, and Sam Darnold – who was brought in during the offseason from Carolina and is expected to be the backup.

Even still, Jerry Jones was beaming about his newest acquisition, despite the fact that he didn’t consult with McCarthy or current starting QB Dak Prescott before he made the decision to bring Trey Lance to Big D.

“The way we have it structured gets a lot of criticism,” Jerry Jones said after the trade was completed. “But with the way I’m involved and have all the ongoing information, I didn’t have to fool around. I got it done. I didn’t have to send it around. I can make that trade in five minutes.

“I had everything at my fingertips. I didn’t have to visit with anyone as to what we thought of Trey Lance, because I knew it already. It’s a continual thing. In our business, you have to be prepared to catch an opportunity. You can’t wait to have a committee meeting over something like that, or else the train’s gone.”

Despite the surprising move, it will still be Prescott who will take the snaps on Sunday, as the new – and possibly improved – Cowboys will kick off the 2023 campaign on Sunday night against the Giants in New York. That is, unless Jerry Jones decides to trade him first without telling him.
