The normally big-spending Red Sox organization has been surprisingly quiet around the Hot Stove League in 2023

Nearly every off-season, big market teams have regularly gobbled up premier free agents with huge salaries and long-term deals. The Boston Red Sox, along with their rivals the New York Yankees, are always ready to spend money like drunken sailors. But while major names have been on the move, the Red Sox have seemingly been standing pat.

Still, Red Sox officials say they are out there, pursuing the pieces that could push them past their division rivals in 2024. Manager Alex Cora says that despite the fact the team hasn’t made a huge splash yet, they’re always on the lookout.

“We’re working. [New GM Craig Breslow] is working, the group is working, it just hasn’t happened, yet,” Cora said according to the Boston Herald. “But it hasn’t happened [business-wide].”

“These two guys have dominated the game, Ohtani dominated the whole Winter Meetings, Yamamoto is doing the same thing right now, and in this case, I believe it’s taking longer because the guy is really intrigued with the possible teams he might play.”

The Red Sox (78-84) are coming off a tough season for the famed franchise. They finished in last place for the fifth time in 11 years. (They also finished last in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2020).

The Yankees have added Juan Soto and remain favorites to sign Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The Orioles are coming off a 100-win season, and the Blue Jays came down to the wire of nearly signing Shohei Ohtani.

The Sox have a lot of work to do to get out of the cellar. And they better start cracking. The Red Sox 2024 spring training will begin on February 24th, 2024 at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Florida.
