Every parent’s nightmare occurred this past week when Illinois teenager Amari Crite, 14-years-old, died suddenly during a high school basketball game after unexpectedly collapsing.

Write passed away while playing at Momence High School in Momence, Illinois, according to a report from Fox News.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the heartbreaking news of the passing of one of our 9th-grade students on January 25, 2024,” Momence Superintendent Shannon Anderson stated. “Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this tragic loss.”

Anderson added later that “Our primary focus right now is on supporting one another and providing the necessary resources for our community to cope with this loss,” stating that grief counselors would be on hand for students as well.

“We ask for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.”

The family of Crite has since started a GoFundMe campaign in order to cover funeral expenses, raising more than $53,000 since launching shortly after her death.
