Happy Gilmore is considered one of the greatest sports comedies of all-time. The 1996 flick, starring the likes of Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Carl Weathers and Bob Barker, is also considered one of the best comedies of the modern era.

So, why even consider doing a sequel to such fine art? It doesn’t make sense. It’s almost akin to rebooting the likes of Forrest Gump and Gone with the Wind on the drama side.

With that said, we’re not in the game of questioning the genius of Sandler himself. We’re way beyond that point given the performances he’s allowed us to enjoy.

It was last month that McDonald — of Shooter McGavin fame — seemingly broke some news indicating that the script for a sequel has been completed.

“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,’” he said. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’ Maybe you should cut that out because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

Sandler had not broached the topic since McDonald came out with his comments last month. Apparently, because he told the veteran actor to keep it to himself. Sandler shared his conversation on the Dan Patrick Show recently, mocking McDonald in the process while confirming that a sequel is in the works. As always, it was some funny stuff.

“You know, he kept it mostly private. He told a couple of DJs about it. They usually are great at secrets. I was excited that Shooter was in the room with me,” Sandler told Patrick.

Sandler also indicated that they’ll be paying tribute to the late-great Carl Weathers, Bob Barker and Joe Flaherty. Perhaps, the best part is Sandler noting that he’d love to get current “The Price is Right” host Drew Carey in the movie. Remember, that show is what Barker was known for before his untimely passing.

Alas, we find it hard to imagine Carey being able to fill those huge shoes. No offense, sir. But …

Yeah, that’s genius level stuff right there. It’s also one of the problems with doing a remake of an original comedy that was this good. But I digress.

This new iteration would make its way to Netflix given Sandler’s $250 million contract with the streaming company.
