New York Yankees, Solar Eclipse Day
Problem Solved / USA TODAY NETWORK

The New York Yankees were supposed to host the winless (and laughable) Miami Marlins Monday afternoon. It was part of an entire “Solar Eclipse Day” promotional event for the MLB team.

The problem? North America is having a legtimate total solar eclipse right when the game was set to take place in the Bronx. Being trusting of humans not to do the stupid thing just wasn’t a great idea.

About that? The Yankees have pushed the game back from 2:05 PM ET to 6:05 PM ET. Yes, this is a pretty good decision.

WFAN’s Evan Roberts had the absolutely best reaction to the news of New York pushing its game back. His take is based on reality and actual understanding of the idiocy that was taking place to even schedule this game in the first place.

Common sense. Hey, isn’t that a pretty cool idea?

New York Yankees, MLB Should Be Roasted For Planning “Solar Eclipse Day”

“Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing.

Viewing any part of the bright Sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury.”

NASA warning on total solar eclipse

I swear we were all raised with this understanding in school. You know, at a young and formative age. Alas, we need to be reminded.

Adding to this is that the New York Yankees and MLB were planning a game in the midst of an eclipse is the fact that baseball players actually look up to the sky to catch baseballs. Science. Isn’t it amazing?

It’s almost like we’re living the full plot to “Idiocracy.”
