Kirk Cousins, Atlanta Falcons

It was just last month that the Atlanta Falcons handed four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins a four-year, $180 million contract with $100 million guaranteed.

This just adds to the riches of a slightly above-average quarterback who has already earned nearly $300 million in his 12-year career with the Washington Commanders and Minnesota Vikings.

So, what is the title of this article all about? Someone pays you $100 million in guaranteed cash, and you’d be as gleeful as Travis Kelce listening to a Taylor Swift song.

About that? Atlanta did something extremely weird during the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft on Thursday. The team selected quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the eighth pick in the annual event. No, we’re not talking about a two-quarterback fantasy team. Last we heard, only one quarterback steps on to an actual football field at a time.

Let’s get this right for a second.

  • Pay $180 million for a 35-year-old quarterback
  • Turn around and select a 24-year-old quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft

More so than this not making any sense from a football perspective, it really does seem like the Falcons screwed over a quarterback who just recently said he wants to end his career with the Falcons. Yeah, that’s likely not going to happen.

Those watching the NFL Draft in Detroit from the comfort of their own homes (or bars) were stunned by Atlanta’s decision. Not only that, but they also pointed out just how it impacts Cousins.

While this is all real life between Cousins, his family and the Falcons; these reactions were downright hilarious:
