Not all heroes wear capes. Some are just cold. Ice-cold assassins. Enter Rory McIlroy, who just fired off a round of 66 at the RBC Canadian Open and is in the hunt for his third championship in the past four runnings of the tourney.
What makes him so cold? Sure, one might think the Canadian air at Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Ontario is one source.
But no, we’re talking about a guy who is going through a shocking divorce showing up to the opening round hungover, and still managing to find himself in the mix on the leaderboard.
That’s right. McIlroy admitted to being a “little groggy” to start the round after tipping back some “glasses of wine” at a birthday party for his caddie.
Golfweek senior writer Adam Schupak told the story in a post on X in which he declared the 4-time major championship winner as getting off to a “solid start.”
“Rory said he was a little groggy this morning after having a couple glasses of wine celebrating caddie Harry Diamond’s birthday last night,” writes Schupak. “No birdies on the front but rallied for a 66.”

Rory McIlroy Serves Divorce Papers Through A PI
When Rory McIlroy isn’t getting embalmed with wine the night before a big championship, he’s doling out divorce papers to his wife through a proxy and simultaneously winning tournaments.
McIlroy’s wife Erica Stoll was handed divorce papers earlier this month by private investigator Carl Woods, a Palm Beach police officer who also runs a process-serving business.
“A phone call will not protect you,” the summons read. “Your written response, including the case number given above and the names of the parties, must be filed if you want the court to hear your side of the case.”
“If you do not file your response on time, you may lose the case, and your wages, money and property may thereafter be taken without further warning from the court,” it added.
Ice, ice baby.
McIlroy signed the divorce papers while competing at the Wells Fargo Championship. He won the tournament by 5 strokes over PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele, and a day later had the investigator deliver the bad news.
I mean, if anybody deserves to get juiced up whenever he wants, it’s Rory. Or Stoll, for that matter as well.

Finding Himself
Reports have surfaced indicating that Rory McIlroy is “trying to find himself” following news of the divorce.
“He’s just trying to find himself, focus and get back to winning,” a source told People Magazine.
Perhaps he found himself at the bottle of a wine glass.
Whatever, you can’t argue with results. If he shoots a few more 66s he’ll find himself alone at the top of the RBC Championship leaderboard.
McIlroy sits just 4 strokes off the lead after his first-round performance. Play resumes today.
