The golf star Rory McIlroy shocked the world last week when he filed for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll after seven years of marriage. The timing was especially surprising, since it was just days before the start of the PGA Championship.
Truth Behind Rory’s Divorce
Now, an insider close to the situation is speaking out to reveal the truth behind this divorce.
“A point of contention in Rory’s marriage with Erica was that Erica was lonely in their marriage,” the insider told Us Weekly. “Rory was a hard person to be married to.”
The marriage reportedly hit a “breaking point” after the 2020 birth of their daughter Poppy. Erica then threw herself into motherhood, while Rory’s frequent time on the road playing tournaments began to take a toll.
“She knew what she was getting into with his profession, but once they had Poppy, things really changed and she had a new perspective,” the source explained. “Erica was usually absent for most of his tournaments and was really focused on Poppy.”
The marriage reportedly deteriorated to the point where Rory and Erica “were living very different lives the last two years with him being on the road, and eventually she had a breaking point.”

Rory And Erica’s History
Rory, 35, first met Erica, 36, at the 2012 Ryder Cup, where she was working for the PGA, according to Daily Mail. They allegedly were just friends at first and only became romantic after he broke off his engagement to the tennis star Caroline Wozniacki in 2014.
Rory reportedly ended his engagement to Caroline in a three-minute phone call just hours after telling her he loved her. A source close to the Danish tennis player said that she “wants no part of his drama” amidst his divorce.
Official court documents filed in Palm Beach County state that Rory and Erica’s marriage is “irretrievably broken.” For legal representation, Rory has hired Thomas Sasser, who represented Tiger Woods in his 2010 divorce from Elin Nordegren.
The court documents go on to ask for shared custody and a parenting plan to be established for their 3 year-old daughter.

Rory Wants Divorce To Be ‘Amicable’
Rory broke his silence through his team only by briefly confirming the divorce. His reps added that he wants to make sure the divorce process is “as respectful and amicable as possible.”
Rory refused to address the divorce when speaking to reporters ahead of last week’s PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Members of the media were told not to ask about the divorce, as he would “not be making any additional comments on his private life.”
“I’m ready to play this week,” he simply said when asked how he was doing.

In the PGA Championship, Rory ultimately finished tied for 12th, nine shots behind the first-time major winner Xander Schauffele. Erica is believed to still be at their $22 million Jupiter, Florida mansion with their daughter.
Divorce is never easy, particularly when there are children involved. For Poppy’s sake, here’s hoping Rory and Erica’s divorce can stay as amicable as possible!
