Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has found himself embroiled in controversy after comments he made during a commencement speech at Benedictine College last month.

It’s gotten to the point that fans have started a petition demanding that Kansas City releases the record-breaking kicker.

Controversy. That seems to be the word of the year around the United States. Wherever we look, there is always something popping up. That’s true within the micro lens of the sports world, too.

Rarely, are we subjected to good news. But this time, Butker finds himself in the headlines for all of the right reasons.

It was on Thursday that alarming reports came out of Kansas City surrounding second-year defensive tackle BJ Thompson. He suffered a medical emergency in a team meeting during minicamp.

Thompson reportedly suffered a seizure and went into cardiac arrest during a routine special teams meeting. Action from members of the team and organization helped save Thompson’s life.

“Kansas City Chiefs vice president Rick Burkholder gave a positive update on BJ Thompson, saying the defensive end is alert, awake and ‘coming through quite well [and] headed in the absolute right direction.'”

Burkholder’s update included a note about how Butker “immediately ran toward the training room” to make the medical staff aware of the emergency.

The staff was ultimately able to use CPR and AED shock to bring Thompson back.

The sophomore defensive tackle was reportedly in cardiac arrest for a minute to a minute and a half. Without quick action from Butker and other members of the organization, this situation could have gotten more dire.

Give Butker and Co. credit where it’s due.
