The NFL released the top-10 in its list of the 100 best players on Friday. Most figured two-time reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs would top the list.

Mahomes has led Kansas City to three of the past five Lombardi Trophies. He’s earned the MVP in the big game three times during that span, with two regular-season MVPs to his name. He’s considered a generational talent and is already one of the best quarterbacks in modern NFL history.

That’s why it was such a surprise that Mahomes was unveiled as the fourth-best player in the game, as voted on by NFL players.

We’re not exactly sure what went into the players making this odd decision. But it was absolutely a shock to football fans the world over.

Here is a break down of the top 10.

  • 10. Maxx Crosby, Las Vegas Raiders
  • 9. Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs
  • 8. T.J. Watt, Pittsburgh Steelers
  • 7. Trent Williams, San Francisco 49ers
  • 6. Chris Jones, Kansas City Chiefs
  • 5. Myles Garrett, Cleveland Browns
  • 4. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
  • 3. Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco 49ers
  • 2. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
  • 1. Tyreek Hill, Miami Dolphins

Yes, a wide receiver ranked No. 1 among the best NFL players. Sure, Hill has been sensational with the Miami Dolphins after being traded by Mahomes’ Chiefs team following the 2021 season. But that’s absolutely absurd.

As for Lamar Jackson coming in at two, he did win the regular-season MVP a season ago. But another bomb job in the playoffs should have disqualified the quarterback from ranking ahead of Mahomes. The best running back in the game, Christian McCaffrey earned NFL Offensive Player of the Year honors a season ago. Even then, the idea of him ranking ahead of Mahomes is all sorts of crazy.

Obviously, people had their reactions to Mahomes not being ranked within the top three heading into the 2024 NFL season.
