American rugby player Ilona Maher went viral during the 2024 Olympics for her performance in helping the women’s team secure a bronze in Paris – their first-ever Olympic medal.
She is now parlaying that into a little notoriety back here at home.
Maher has been announced as the new cover model for Sports Illustrated‘s iconic Swimsuit Issue in September.
“We’re excited to introduce professional rugby player Ilona Maher, a two-time Olympian who won a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris #Olympics,” SI wrote on Instagram.
Editor-in-chief of the magazine, MJ Day, called Maher’s photoshoot “more than just a celebration of her athletic achievements—it’s a powerful statement.”
Here’s a little teaser, but you’ll have to check out Sports Illustrated’s Instagram for the announcement video.

Ilona Maher And ‘Body Positivity’
Rugby player Ilona Maher was celebrated in Forbes Magazine for her “body positivity” after the team won a historic medal in the Paris games.
The outlet notes that Maher is a prop center “usually among the largest players on a rugby team.”
“I just run through people and try to set up for something,” she said.
“All body types matter. All body types are worthy,” Maher told fans in a TikTok video from Paris. “From the smallest gymnast to the tallest volleyball player, from a rugby player to a shot-putter, a sprinter.”
“All body types are beautiful, can do amazing things,” added Maher. “Truly see yourself in these athletes and know that you can do it too.”

Social Media Queen
Ilona Maher has a tremendous social media following that began during the Tokyo Olympics when she started live vlogging from the Games.
She has over 2.3 million followers on TikTok and over 3.8 million on Instagram.
She views her online presence as a useful tool, appreciating the opportunities it has brought her throughout her athletic career.
“Do I wish I had to do it? No,” Maher said. “But I love what it’s done for me.”
“I’m a female athlete in a sport that’s not very big, especially in America. It’s not a money-making sport,” she said. “I want to make sports a career and I don’t think many women can think that way.”
She’s certainly found a way to successfully market herself.
