There’s being fired up for a football game, and then there’s Chuck Cecil-level fired up for a game.
Arizona Wildcats senior defensive assistant Cecil was captured by Fox cameras head-butting a helmeted player, Owen Goss, in an attempt to fire him up.
The incident took place prior to their matchup against their rivals, the Arizona State Sun Devils.
The problem was that Goss was wearing his helmet at the time. Undeterred, Cecil, who is 60 years old, repeatedly slammed his head into Goss’s helmet.
The results were as you’d expect – Cecil with a bloody melon.

This Arizona Coach Is A Wild Man
Judging by that intensity, you wouldn’t be surprised to see the Wildcats come out and run through their opponent while crushing a bowl full of rusty nails in the process.
Alas, ’twas not to be. Despite Coach Cecil’s efforts to motivate the team, Arizona lost to Arizona State 49-7.
Postgame, Wildcats coach Brent Brennan expressed dismay at the team’s performance, calling it “soul-crushing” given the significance of the rivalry game.
Arizona State was a 9-point favorite heading into the matchup. They are tied with three other teams (7-2) atop the Big 12 standings. Arizona is second to last at (2-7). So, the result wasn’t all that surprising.
Still, imagine seeing your defensive coach banging his head against a helmeted player’s noggin and then immediately going out in the first half and falling behind 35-0.
I mean, what does the guy have to do?

Cecil’s Part In The Rivalry
Chuck Cecil knows what it takes to get fired up for the rivalry with Arizona State.
He was a walk-on at the University of Arizona, where he eventually earned consensus All-America honors and was named Pacific-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1987 with nine interceptions.
He set the Pac-10 record for career interceptions with 21, and his four-interception game against Stanford in 1987 tied a conference record.
He’s remembered for a 105-yard interception return against Arizona State in 1986, considered one of the greatest plays in Wildcat history.

Drafted in the fourth round by the Green Bay Packers in 1988, Cecil played for the Packers (1988–1992), Phoenix Cardinals (1993), and Houston Oilers (1995).
Known for his aggressive play, he earned the nickname “Scud” Cecil for his hit-or-miss tackling style. His career highlights include making the Pro Bowl in 1992.
In 2017, he returned to the University of Arizona as a senior defensive analyst. And it seems he’s still living up to that “Scud” nickname.
