ESPN personality Pat McAfee is having to clean up another mess involving comments about WNBA star Caitlin Clark.
McAfee, who had to apologize previously for sarcastically using a curse in an awkward attempt to praise Clark, said “God” and “the universe told me not to talk about her.”
The comments led many to speculate that the higher power he was referencing was the network he works for. So much so, that McAfee felt the need to clarify. He was being literal, you see.
“This isn’t true. I said ‘God’ and the ‘universe’ told me to stop talking about it. that was thru me saying something that inevitably always caused full chaos,” McAfee wrote on X.
“It wasn’t great for my life or for the progrum (sic). You took a completely false headline from an asinine account and amplified it,” he added. “ESPN has zero say over my show.”

Pat McAfee Again Walking Back Comments On Caitlin Clark
This is, quite famously, not the first time Pat McAfee has had to walk it back. It’s not even the first time involving Caitlin Clark.
McAfee previously tried pointing out that Clark is almost singularly the person responsible for an explosion of popularity benefitting the WNBA. Which is true. But it’s how he described the situation that had people talking.
“I would like the media people that continue to say, ‘This rookie class, this rookie class, this rookie class’. Nah, just call it for what it is – there’s one white […] for the Indiana team who is a superstar,” he said.
Monday's Pat McAfee Show opened with a Caitlin Clark PowerPoint:

He walked back the comment as best he could.
“I shouldn’t have used ‘white […]‘ as a descriptor of Caitlin Clark. No matter the context,” he said on X. “Even if we’re talking about race being a reason for some of the stuff happening. I have way too much respect for her and women to put that into the universe.”
McAfee said he sent a message of apology directly to Clark. The Indiana Fever rookie never addressed the situation publicly.
Pat’s Always Flip-Flopping
Earlier this year, McAfee was all over the map when it came to controversy surrounding Aaron Rodgers and Jimmy Kimmel. We’ll spare you the details because that whole controversy was media-generated and blown out of proportion.
But… McAfee initially lectured Rodgers about free speech.
“We live in a country that has freedom of speech, but you’re going to have to deal with consequences of your freedom of speech,” he said.
McAfee then said the New York Jets quarterback would no longer be appearing on the show for the rest of the NFL season, then promptly had him back the next day.
Always a fun time on the McAfee show!
