During the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York this past weekend, European golfers, such as Rory McIlroy, faced intense heckling from American fans.

At times, the taunts crossed a line with multiple expletives being hurled, and McIlroy’s teammate Shane Lowry being leveled with insults about his weight. Not to mention the high-profile incident where Rory’s wife had a drink thrown in her direction.

Now, Paige Spiranac, one of the hottest golf influencers on social media today, is weighing in.

“I’m sadly not shocked by the fan behavior at the Ryder Cup because it’s become the norm at most sporting events and in my opinion it needs to change across all sports,” she wrote on X.

“I’m not saying you have to sit quietly. You can have passion, chirp, have fun banter, enjoy yourself at the event or game, but there’s a line and it’s crossed so many times now.”

Paige Spiranac takes on Ryder Cup Fans

The scene at Bethpage was one of utter chaos. The rowdy atmosphere included obscenities and insults hurled at golfers from across the pond. Then, the flying drink scandal surfaced.

McIlroy tore into fans after the tournament when video showed his wife nearly getting pelted with a drink.

“I think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week,” he said. “No, this should not be what is acceptable in the Ryder Cup.”

Paige believes several elements come together, not just at the Ryder Cup, but sporting events in general, that create unruly scenes such as this.

“I don’t think rowdy fan behavior is also a new problem. Competition, alcohol, packed stadiums, crowd mentality all contribute to inappropriate behavior,” Spiranac said. “Especially now that over-the-top antics will lead to virality online.”

Still, she believes the disgusting actions are coming from a handful of individuals, which can be corrected by actually holding them accountable.

“The good news is that it’s usually only a handful of people who are belligerent,” Spiranac wrote. “The bad news is that it ruins the experience for everyone else. The security needs to crack down on that type of behavior quickly and start handing out harsh repercussions, in my opinion.”

Tried to coax the American team to Victory

Ultimately, McIlroy expressed satisfaction in silencing the fans through Europe’s performance. Team Europe successfully defended the Ryder Cup despite a furious rally by the American team on the final day of competition, winning 15-13.

The victory was also despite Paige trying her best, as only she can, to motivate the Americans.

Spiranac congratulated the European team after their impressive victory.

“One of the most exciting days in golf! Congratulations to the European team and shout out to the US team for showing so much heart today,” she said.

“This is what sports and competition is all about. Special.”
