This past week, the mother of Tiger Woods, Kultida Woods, passed away at the age of 80. Tiger had originally committed to the Genesis Invitational this past Friday, but then withdrew on Tuesday of tournament week. He had said in a statement “I had planned to tee it up but I’m just not ready. I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss…”.

We can’t blame him. It’s not to say all losses aren’t hard, but boys will always have a special, top-tier spot for Mom.

Woods’ golf league TGL held a moment of silence in her honor before they started play on Tuesday night. That was the first of many tributes across the golf world.

During Sunday’s final round, every player wore a red pin on their cap – Kultida gave Tiger the belief that red was his power color. Every single Sunday during tournament week, Tiger wears red.

Woods also appeared in the broadcast booth during the telecast on Sunday afternoon to reflect on what he’s been going through.

Tida’s Influence And Impact

Kultida was the power behind the throne who would take Tiger to every junior golf tournament at a young age in his home state of California. She also instilled the work ethic and discipline he needed to be successful in school – and later in life, of course.

Woods in his interview stated point blank, “She was hard on me about school and getting good grades. If I didn’t get any homework done, I wasn’t allowed to go play.”

It was fitting that just before her passing, Tida attended a TGL event to watch Tiger play. She was by his side from beginning to end in his golf career.

For those unfamiliar, TGL is an indoor golf league created by Tiger and fellow PGA Tour pro Rory Mcilroy. What makes it different is that it’s team oriented and has several challenges involved in each match.

All of us at BIS send our condolences to the Woods family.
