Tiger Woods and the rest of the golf world are in mourning after the death of the legendary golf writer Steve DiMeglio.

Woods Mourns DiMeglio

Sadly, DiMeglio died last week of rectal cancer that had spread to his liver. He was 63 years-old. DiMeglio had bravely documented his cancer journey on social media ever since his diagnosis in 2022.

DiMeglio had been close to Woods ever since he took the golf world by storm back in 1996. Woods, 49, took to social media to honor DiMeglio after his passing.

“Unfortunately the golf world lost part of our family today, beloved golf writer Steve DiMeglio,” Woods wrote.”I was always very close to Steve and we texted and talked about how he needed to keep fighting to get better so we could see each other in the Bahamas last month.”

“And we did. I am so grateful for that,” he continued. “This a very sad day for all of golf. We have truly lost a friend.”

DiMeglio Was ‘Beloved By Players’

The PGA Tour issued a statement paying tribute to DiMeglio, describing him as being “beloved by players” because of his “humor and love of the game.”

A very unusual compliment for a sports journalist!

“The PGA TOUR joins the golf world in mourning the loss of our friend, golf journalist Steve DiMeglio,” their statement read. “A fixture at TOUR events for nearly two decades and beloved by players, he inspired us all with his unique perspective, humor and love of the game, even in the midst of his recent, arduous battle with cancer. In the words of our friend Steve, ‘Onward.'”

DiMeglio was incredibly popular with athletes and his fellow reporters as well.

“Steve was a longtime golf reporter at USA TODAY who covered baseball for years before he changed beats. He was incredibly plugged-in, had some of the best sources in the sport and would do anything you asked as an editor,” said Roxanna Scott, executive editor of USA TODAY Sports. “He had a passion for golf that was reflected in his writing and all of the relationships he built through the years.”

“I loved seeing the video of Steve being greeted by Tiger in the Bahamas last month,” she continued. “I’m sure that meant a lot to Steve. We will all miss Steve’s thoughtfulness, his updates on his sports bets and his wonderful storytelling.”

The video Scott is referring to is from when DiMeglio traveled to the Bahamas last month for the Hero World Challenge. There, he got to see Woods as well as Justin Thomas, Keegan Bradley, Jason Day and caddie Joey LaCava. Check out that touching video below.

Four-time PGA Tour winner Billy Andrade described DiMeglio’s popularity best in March of last year.

“Everybody knows him out here. He’s Mr. Golf, USA Today forever,” Andrade said at the time. “One of the great guys of all time.”

DiMeglio is a true legend, and he will be dearly missed in the golf world. Please join us in saying a prayer for Woods and other loved ones of DiMeglio’s as they mourn him during this tragic time.
