Tiger Woods is a one-of-a-kind career golf talent. As such, he gets rewarded with perks designed only for him. And it’s a great move for the world of golf.

Woods just earned himself a golden ticket of sorts.

The PGA Tour policy board has decided to create a special exemption recognizing Tiger’s “exceptional lifetime achievement.” Those achievements include 82 PGA Tour wins and 15 major titles.

The exemption means that starting next year, Woods will be able to tee off in all eight of the tour’s signature events. Prestigious tournaments like The Sentry, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and the Memorial Tournament.

Tiger Woods Given Lifetime Exemption

This special exemption comes as Tiger Woods, who is 48 years old, has had a limited schedule in recent years due to various significant injuries.

His condition has limited him to just nine official PGA Tour events the past three seasons since returning to action at the 2022 Masters. Seven of those have been majors.

“An additional sponsor exemption will be created to recognize Tiger Woods in his own category as a player who has reached an exceptional lifetime achievement threshold of 80+ career wins,” a memo from the PGA Tour policy board reads.

It’s clear the tour would like to see him out on the links more often. Now, he doesn’t have to be worried about which of the signature events he can participate in.

Not The Only Reward From The PGA

Tiger Woods, aside from being granted an exemption by the PGA, was also rewarded for his loyalty to the tour in the face of competition from the Saudi-backed LIV Golf.

Rewarded to the tune of a $100 million equity payout announced in April.

Woods has been rather cagey in recent days regarding his future, saying shortly after the U.S. Open that he only has one more event this year (the British Open) “and then I’ll come back whenever I come back.”

Hopefully, he’ll come back soon.

Perhaps this lifetime exemption is an attempt to dangle a carrot for Tiger to keep making appearances. His participation in signature events will no doubt spur ticket sales and viewership and by extension, generate money.

It’s a win-win for him and the tour.
