The first-ever “Cosmic Baseball” game took place this past weekend with the Tri-City Chili Peppers defeating the Greenbrier Knights, 9-4.
Now, I’m not quite sure about the minds that decided it’d be a great idea to play a baseball game under black lights that create glowing uniforms, bats, bases, and baseballs. And I was rather skeptical when I first got wind of the idea.
Who wants to see a game that looks like a 90s music video on steroids?
That said, look at these video clips. This is pretty badass.

Cosmic Baseball Has Arrived
The introduction of “cosmic baseball” brings a fresh and exciting twist to America’s pastime. The unique lighting and glowing equipment obviously enhance the visual spectacle of the game.
The concept of “cosmic baseball” was made possible through collaborations with several companies, including uniform vendor 3n2, hat producer Bretmor Headwear, and equipment manufacturers Tucci and Wilson Sports Goods, as well as the aid of a local electric company.
As for whether or not there are any visual limitations as a result of using the lights, Chili Peppers owner Chris Martin says it isn’t an issue.
“It’s actually a lighter atmosphere than what most people would think,” said Martin. “You can see everything extremely well.”
He explains that the idea was borne from a mid-game practice by the team to give fans glow sticks. From there, Martin started wondering if there was a way to use black lights for the entire game.
And voila – Cosmic baseball! Seriously people, how cool is this?

Fans Respond
The game was well-received by fans and garnered significant attention on social media, with many expressing their excitement and desire for more “cosmic baseball” games in the future.
The terms “awesome” and “cool” were prevalent in response to the Tri-City Chili Peppers’ social media posts touting the game.
And here’s some good news. This isn’t a one-off event.
The Peppers plan on hosting cosmic baseball games on June 15th, June 28th, and July 20th. One would imagine ticket sales for those games will be … well, out of this world.
Will cosmic baseball continue to be a novelty concept in collegiate baseball or will it find its way into minor or even Major League Baseball?
