The Detroit Tigers’ home game against the Pittsburgh Pirates slated for Tuesday was postponed due to rain. With the two teams playing in different leagues, MLB didn’t want any more postponements. Hence, why they played a doubleheader inside Comerica Park on Wednesday.

The first game got going around 1:00 PM ET. It did not start swimmingly before the Tigers pulled off an 8-0 win over Pittsburgh.

That included a lightning strike unfolding during the early portion of Game 1. Despite what seemed to be dangerous conditions, the game continued.

As for fans, they were told to leave their seats. It created an absolutely insane situation in Detroit.

The near-empty stadium acts very much like a reminder of the COVID-19 shortened 2020 MLB season. It’s not a time any of us want to go back to.

Why Did MLB Continue With Detroit Tigers Game In Lightning Storm?

It’s a very good question. People around the MLB world were wondering the same thing.

It’s really about scheduling. These are the final two games Pittsburgh is slated to play in Detroit during the 2024 MLB season. It would have been difficult to schedule a make-up game.

Even then, the idea of putting players at risk while forcing fans to leave their seats makes no real sense. At the very least, everything seemed to turn out fine.
