Baseball fans are leveling Major League Baseball’s (MLB) new video game-like replay system, which was unveiled during the Tokyo Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs.
The videos are designed to mimic a high-tech aesthetic reminiscent of video games. Yet, MLB wants you to know they aren’t video games.
So yeah, like … Why? Here’s this video game-like feature that isn’t supposed to look like a video game but definitely sorta looks like a video game with old graphics? What for?
Whatever the league is trying to pull off, it’s not working. It turns a perfectly good replay video into something where the players blink in and out, are highly pixelated, and certain portions are blurred.
They actually took something and made it worse. And they were hyping it up as some technological marvel with this video of a diving Dansby Swanson making a spectacular play.
The replay wasn’t spectacular at all.
The replay game has changed forever 😳

No, this is not a video game. This is an on-field replay from the Tokyo Dome 🔥 pic.twitter.com/pPS1ecEL8l
MLB’s New Replay Videos Are Impressing Nobody
Actually, come to think of it, I’m pretty sure the new MLB replays would be better if they just used actual video game reels. MLB The Show has roughly 10,000 times better quality graphics than whatever this is.
Here’s one they used for Shohei Ohtani’s first home run of the season on Wednesday.
This replay angle of Shohei's home run is insane 🤯 pic.twitter.com/7HHzlAsR4F

Yeah, insanely bad.
Fans have absolutely ripped the new MLB replay system due to its poor quality.
“Fresh outta MLB 07 The Show,” one person joked.
“The fact that you have to clarify it’s not a video game is a problem,” another added.
Another opined, “The concept here is very cool, however, this looks like s***.”

Just Another Bad Idea From Manfred
Now look, I’m not an idiot. I get what they’re trying to do here. The tech involves dozens of cameras that almost instantly give the booth the option to create a replay similar to a video game. It will undoubtedly provide unique angles in the future.
Here is an example of the camera replay overlayed with the new version.
We still can't get over this ridiculous replay from the Tokyo Dome 🤯 https://t.co/6ViZqDwQ6c pic.twitter.com/6jVya81gYJ

When viewed from that aspect, it’s kind of cool. But in its current form, it still looks like garbage.
It’s so bad, it makes the ‘Golden At Bat Rule‘ look awesome by comparison. Remember that nuttiness?
The rule, presented by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred as having a lot of “buzz,” would allow each team to have whoever they want to come to the plate once in the game. Take the Yankees, for example. Let’s say they have the bases loaded, two outs in the bottom of the ninth, down three runs, and Oswaldo Cabrera is coming to the plate.
Bam – “golden at-bat” rule – they insert Aaron Judge, walk-off grand slam. It sounds cartoonish and something you’d see out of a video game because it is.
Why is Manfred trying to change baseball into an unwatchable video game?
