New York City Mayor Eric Adams found himself at the center of a baseball brouhaha after he was spotted wearing a hat featuring both the New York Mets and New York Yankees logos.

While it seems understandable for a mayor of New York to support both teams from that city, residents weren’t thrilled with the cap. Being New York, you know they let him have it.

Adams wore the hat during the Columbus Day Parade in Manhattan on Monday.

The mayor is clearly aiming to bridge the gap between Mets and Yankees fans in what could potentially be another Subway Series. However, the approach overlooks the fundamental aspect of sports fandom: the rivalry.

And New Yorkers aren’t afraid to take a stand on any issue – including picking sides in a rivalry.

Fans React To Eric Adams’ Mets-Yankees Hat

New York fans weren’t exactly pleased with Mayor Eric Adams’ decision to waffle over his support by wearing the ridiculous hat.

“That’s worse than cheering for one team over the other. Absolutely no one cheers for both teams,” one person wrote on X.

“Classic ‘it’s both sides’ politics,” another derided.

One man pointed out the obvious – “Trying to make everyone happy just makes everyone mad.”

Can you imagine a politician from California wearing a hat with both the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants logos?

Councilman Justin Brannan snarkily called for legislative action against Eric Adams.

“A Local Law to amend the New York City charter and the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to this hat being made illegal,” he wrote.

Is Another Subway Series On The Horizon?

With Eric Adams showing his allegiance with his little hat – which is to say, he has none – it’s clear he’s hoping for another Subway Series between the Mets and Yankees.

Each team took a step closer to that reality last night with the Yankees dropping the Guardians in Game 1 of the ALCS, 5-2, while the Mets evened the NLCS at a game apiece, beating the Dodgers 7-3.

The last Subway Series between the Mets and the Yankees in a World Series context occurred in 2000. The Yankees defeated the Mets 4 games to 1, clinching their third consecutive championship at the time.

The series was highlighted by strong performances from Yankee players like Derek Jeter and Roger Clemens, alongside key pitching from Orlando Hernandez and Mariano Rivera.

Jeter was named MVP.

Eric Adams isn’t the first mayor of New York to cause a stir with his lack of commitment. Former mayor Michael Bloomberg, prior to the 2003 ALCS between the Yankees and Boston, predominantly wore Yankees gear except for his socks, which were red.
