Singer Ingrid Andress admitted to feeling like “America’s punching bag” after performing drunk during her universally panned rendition of the national anthem at the MLB Home Run Derby last July.
During an appearance on “The Viall Files” podcast Thursday, the embattled singer addressed going to rehab after making a spectacle of herself on national television.
“It only took, you know, global humiliation for me to be like, ‘this is a problem,’” she lamented.
“I’m not gonna bulls— y’all, I was drunk last night,” she wrote in a remarkably frank post on social media after the performance. “I’m checking myself into a facility today to get the help I need.”
As Bounding Into Sports reported at the time, there was hope that she would take rehab seriously and return stronger than ever. She appears to have achieved that.

Remembering Ingrid Andress’ National Anthem
Does anyone need a refresher on what happened with Ingrid Andress at the All-Star game festivities? Imagine 30 long-tailed cats being released into a store exclusively selling rocking chairs. Now, picture that store opening its doors to many customers eager to test out those chairs. On Black Friday.
That noise you’re hearing in your head, I can assure you, is better than what Andress belted out for the crowd that day.
Critics universally panned Andress’ version of the national anthem. The phrase ‘worst version I’ve ever heard’ was bandied about across social media platforms.
The performance was remarkable, considering Andress certainly has significant talent. She’s had multiple songs reach the Billboard Hot 100 Hits list and earned four Grammy nominations.
And yet, here, she sounded like the worst performer at a local karaoke bar.

Not Unexpectedly, She Was Heavily Criticized
Incredibly, the singer was so bombed that she thought her performance was pretty solid.
“I was so gone that afterward, I thought that I like, kind of nailed it,” the 33-year-old shared on the podcast. It wasn’t until the next day that she realized, “I was like ‘okay, this is so unlike me, like, this is not okay.”
As one would imagine, Ingrid Andress was heavily criticized for her performance, and according to this latest interview, the comments hit her pretty hard. But she’s made peace with it.
“I’m fine with being America’s punching bag,” she said, later joking, “For one moment, everybody was united in the fact that I was awful so I feel like I united America in a way.”
“You got to see me in my worst moment,” Andress added. “So now, hopefully everything from here will be great.”
Let’s hope so. It would be a great comeback story if we simply all looked back on this and laughed from here on out.
