Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pope (born Robert Prevost in Chicago), is a dedicated Chicago White Sox fan. It’s quite well-known.

Now, he’s getting an opportunity of a lifetime. The White Sox are essentially saying, “Thou shalt throw out the first pitch.”

Okay, that’s a little dramatic. But still, they’re interested in having the number one baseball fan in God’s eyes on the mound for a ceremonial event of a lifetime.

Justin Ishbia, a part-owner of the White Sox, along with his wife Kristen, personally visited the pope in Vatican City to extend a formal invitation for him to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the team’s proposed new stadium.

This, according to Outkick founder Clay Travis, who sought out Vatican ambassador Brian Burch as a go-between to facilitate the proposal.

The answer, Clay says, may surprise you.

Pope Leo to toss the baseball?

For those of you doubting the vision of Pope Leo on the mound for a Chicago White Sox game, Travis contends that the Holy Father is open to the idea.

“Luckily, Ambassador Burch loved the idea, and this morning in Vatican City, Justin and his wife Kristen met the pope, delivered a team autographed 2005 White Sox World Series replica jersey, and conveyed the first pitch invitation to Pope Leo, who said yes, so long as his schedule permits,” Travis writes.

So, it seems to be a go. Although the caveat of that whole scheduling thing indeed remains. The Pope, as Travis reports, tends to be “kind of busy.”

Now, before we get too excited, such an event will take many years to come to fruition. The Sox have discussed plans to move from Guaranteed Rate Field to a new ballpark in the South Loop’s “The 78” development after their lease expires … in 2029.

While proposals and artist renderings have been released, significant hurdles, such as securing public funding remain, and the project is not guaranteed.

It’ll take a miracle at this rate. Hey, wait a minute. If there’s anybody who can deliver a miracle, it’s Pope Leo.

A big, big White Sox fan

How big a fan of the South Side Chicago team is Pope Leo? Enough that he delivered a savage jab at Chicago Cubs fans at the Vatican, shortly after their team was ousted from the playoffs.

Vatican Media last month posted a clip of the Pope driving through a crowd of devoted followers, waving and taking in the flowers and cheers. That’s when one person decided to troll him with a Cubs cheer.

Without missing a beat, a smile on his face, the pontiff replied, “Han perdido! They lost!”

One of the Ten Commandments is “Thou shalt not kill,” and yet the Pope went and ended this guy with four words.

This past summer, Pope Leo was caught in a viral moment wearing a Chicago White Sox hat in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican. That’s how down-to-earth this guy is.

A video resurfaced after he was anointed pontiff, showing Leo wearing team gear during Game 1 of the 2005 World Series against the Astros. The Sox won that series. In fact, they swept the ‘Stros.

Maybe his holiness can bring the White Sox a little badly needed good fortune by showing up at a game and tossing out the first pitch.
