The controversial NASCAR star Bubba Wallace is speaking out in a new interview to reveal when he’ll retire from the sport.

At just 31 years of age, Wallace likely has quite a few years to achieve success in NASCAR. Despite this, he’s already thinking about when he’ll potentially throw in the towel, which may not be a good sign if you’re holding Bubba stock.

Wallace Talks Retirement

“I think there comes a point where if you feel like your competitiveness starts to fall then it’s like, okay you need to look yourself in the mirror that next season that comes up and be like this could be your last,” Wallace told Rubbin’ is Racing.

“I would honestly say I’m not the one to just ride around for a paycheck you know I still want to be competitive,” he added. “And so when that opportunity runs out then that’ll be it for me.”

While Wallace still plans to continue racing for the foreseeable future, he’s also focusing on aspirations outside of the NASCAR world. Indeed, he’s been open about wanting to establish his own multimedia production company.

And of course, he’s a new father.

“Bigger picture, I do want to start my production company one day and start doing a lot of these things that I’m a part of,” Wallace recently admitted.

Denny Hamlin Sounds Off

Wallace’s comments on retirement were remarkably similar to those made by his 23XI Racing team owner Denny Hamlin last year.

“The moment I feel like I can’t win at every track, I’ll probably get out whenever that might be,” Hamlin said when asked about retiring. “But I just feel like I’m still on top of things.”

This comes after Hamlin weighed in on Wallace winning his first NASCAR Duel race last week.

“I mean, I think for everyone it’s different. It’s certainly awesome to start your Speedweek off that way and I mean, it’s on Thursday. I think it means [something] different for everyone,” Hamlin said after Wallace’s victory. “He hadn’t won one yet, so I think that is big. You also get 10 points for the regular season. So, you do get points which definitely matters. And you get a trophy.”

“What I loved about winning a Duel or back when we had this Clash at Daytona, is the trophy would sit in your motor home all week,” he continued. “You know, that trophy sits there because you’re there all week and it’s like, ‘Hell yeah, we’re already leaving with some hardware.’ Right? No matter what happens in the 500, you’re going home with something. So, that’s the best part of it.”

Wallace Celebrates His Win

Wallace himself was overjoyed by this win.

“I’ve wanted one of these Duel wins for so long, all my buddies have got them,” Wallace told reporters after the race.

Wallace has long been seen as one of the most controversial stars of the NASCAR world. That’s likely why there was a crowd of fans booing him after his Duel victory. Wallace responded to this by putting his finger to his mouth in an attempt to silence them.

“That’s why I gave the old silencer out there on the front stretch,” Wallace later explained. “We’re here. You know, I got a team that believes in me and I have just as much faith in this team to take it to new heights.”

Watch Wallace talk more about this in the video below.

Only time will tell how much longer Wallace decides that racing is worth it for him. It will certainly be interesting to see when he retires!
