Bubba Wallace’s Tribute to Lewis Hamilton

In the deluge of comments that Hamilton received, it was Bubba Wallace’s that shone and pierced through the clutter. The race-winning NASCAR driver, who is known for breaking barriers in his sport, tweeted his excitement with one-word message: “Tough!!💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾.”

This one-word statement of approval and enthusiasm perhaps best captures Wallace’s excitement and respect for Hamilton as he begins this new ambitious adventure. Wallace has always credited Hamilton as one of his biggest inspirations over the years. They both share a special bond as being successful and the only drivers of color in their respective motorsports, which are predominantly white environments.

In an interview, Bubba Wallace once said that back in the day growing up, he always looked up to Hamilton, “To see him conquering the track damn near every weekend motivates me to try to do the same.” Their friendship is well documented: Hamilton has shown support to Wallace during some important moments in his NASCAR career.

A Legacy of Breaking Barriers

The F1 and NASCAR drivers have more than just mutual professional admiration; both strive for greater diversity in motorsports. Hamilton’s success as the only black Formula 1 driver encouraged Wallace to believe there could be a great black driver on a NASCAR Cup Series level. (No one is saying Wallace is ‘great’ – but he can become great.)

In return, Bubba Wallace has motivated fans and aspiring racers in the U.S., furthering better representation in the racing industry. Hamilton has also stood for Wallace and has been supporting him during some crises. When Wallace took a lot of heat for his insistence on removing the confederate flag from NASCAR in 2020, Hamilton supported him telling Wallace to stay strong and to continue pushing forward.
