The Los Angeles Lakers traded Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Luka Dončić in February, a blockbuster deal that shook the NBA.

It even rattled some of the Lakers’ players, even though they clearly got the better end of the deal.

Now, some of the group chat messages among the players, including Davis, have been detailed in Yaron Weitzman’s book, “A Hollywood Ending: The Dreams and Drama of the LeBron Lakers.”

News of the blockbuster trade broke via insider Shams Charania’s report, which Lakers rookie Bronny James shared in the team’s group chat.

Bronny, in such disbelief over the news, wondered if the story was the result of a hack. From there, things got worse. Especially when Davis and his father, LeBron, chimed in.

Lakers group chat reveals player reactions

Doncic was traded from the Mavericks to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. The Utah Jazz was also involved. The move sent shockwaves across the NBA.

The shock was primarily directed at the Mavericks organization for trading away a much younger superstar and pillar of their team.

But that’s not to say the Lakers players weren’t taken aback as well. As noted, Bronny seemed unable to believe the news. Nor could Davis, apparently.

“Did these [n-word] just trade me?” Davis wrote. He then left the group chat.

LeBron followed up with a simple, “WTF.”

LeBron’s reaction

Despite LeBron’s reaction, it seems almost 100% unlikely that he didn’t know about the trade ahead of time or at least knew it might happen.

The Lakers’ organization forfeited its future by placating its star, wasting a draft pick on Bronny in an attempt to keep James with the team. They made it clear they were going to do this to please him. But, you don’t think they cleared Luka for Davis with him ahead of time?

P’shaw.

Following the trade, an injury-plagued Davis averaged 20 points over nine games with Dallas, while Dončić tallied 28.2 points per game for the Lakers.

The Mavericks’ season ended when they exited in the play-in tournament, and the Lakers fell in five first-round games to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
