Lebron James’ son, Bronny, was taken to the hospital on Monday after suffering a cardiac arrest during a University of Southern California basketball workout.
A 911 call was placed at 9:26 AM Monday from USC’s Galen Center for the 18-year-old hoops prodigy, whose father just broke the NBA’s all-time scoring record in 2022. Bronny James was unconscious when medical services arrived, and he was then transported by ambulance to the hospital.
Lebron James and his family issued a statement through a spokesman, thanking those on the scene and those who showed concern for Bronny. The high school All-American steps on campus looking to follow in the footsteps of his iconic father, who has said that he would like the opportunity to someday play in the pros alongside his progeny.
For now, however, he’s just glad to see his son in stable condition.
“Yesterday while practicing Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest,” the family’s statement read. “Medical staff was able to treat Bronny and take him to the hospital. He is now in stable condition and no longer in ICU. We ask for respect and privacy for the James family and we will update media when there is more information.”
“LeBron and Savannah wish to publicly send their deepest thanks and appreciation to the USC medical and athletic staff for their incredible work and dedication to the safety of their athletes.”
Bronny is the eldest child of Lebron James and his wife, Savannah, and was born while his father was the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year. He became a prep star at Sierra Canyon Prep in Los Angeles before eventually signing with the Trojans. 2023 will mark a big year for the family, as Bronny will be playing right down the street from where his Dad takes the court for the Lakers.
Lebron James expects his son to eventually make the transition to the NBA in short order, but some scouts say not so fast. Despite his prestigious pedigree, the 6’3″ guard might lack the size and physicality to take it to the next level, despite his outstanding shooting range and defensive tenacity.
