Officers involved in the arrest of NBA player Cameron Payne this past June warned him that if he was lying about his name they’d have to arrest him.

He kept lying.

And they hilariously pointed out how “dumb” the move was. You know, considering he’s a recognizably famous athlete.

Police in Scottsdale, Arizona were called to a disturbance allegedly involving Payne and his girlfriend only to find the pair insisting nothing was wrong.

Not pleased with having wasted their time, the cops asked for Payne’s real name and date of birth. Which would have ended the matter.

For reasons known only to Payne, he kept giving his name as “Terry Johnson”. He even offered a fake DOB.

Time after time, officers explained that if he was lying, he’d be arrested. Terry, er … Cameron was undeterred.

Cops To Cameron Payne: ‘That Was Dumb’

Cameron Payne showed off his Murray State education during the interaction with the police officers prior to his arrest.

Terry Johnson it was. Until it wasn’t. Payne finally admitted his real name after several minutes, prompting officers to immediately slap the cuffs on him.

“That was … that was dumb,” an officer can be heard saying according to TMZ Sports, who obtained video of the incident.

He was immediately cuffed.

And the officers couldn’t help pointing out how dumb Payne was. He called 911 only to say ‘Nothing to see here’ and then couldn’t just give his real name when asked.

“That was the dumbest way to get arrested, man,” another officer said. “Like, I’ve had people get arrested for some dumb stuff, but this is at the top of the list.”

‘We Would Have Been Gone’

It’s hard to describe just how right the cops are in this situation. Cameron Payne was dumb to give a fake name after calling 911. It was a disaster of his own making.

“Dude, you realize you could have just told us your real name,” the cop says. “We would have been gone five minutes ago. Now you’re going to jail.”

Payne was booked on one count of refusal to provide a truthful name and one count of false report to law enforcement. A hearing is scheduled for November.

Payne was signed by the New York Knicks over the summer. His new teammate, guard Josh Hart, couldn’t resist taking his own jab upon hearing the news.

“Shoutout Terry,” he wrote on X.
