In an era where sports stars often chase fame and fortune well into their careers, AJ Griffin, a former Duke star and 16th overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks in 2022, is taking a path less traveled.

At just 21, after a promising start in professional basketball that included some spectacular game-winning shots, Griffin has announced his retirement from the NBA.

He plans to dedicate his life to following Jesus and entering into a full-time ministry.

“I gave up basketball to follow Jesus,” Griffin said, according to CBS Sports. “And I know that in a lot of people’s eyes, that seems like — it seems like a loss in the world’s eyes.”

“But, I just want to let you guys know that I’m super excited because I truly get to serve God, you know, with my full “Yes,” and I feel like letting go of basketball is allowing me to, you know, go into full-time ministry and truly serving the Lord with all my heart — with all my time too, as well.”

Griffin added, “So, I’m just excited to see where that leads me.”

AJ Griffin Had A Promising Start To His Career

AJ Griffin’s basketball journey was one of notable promise.

After a standout season at Duke, his skills on the court hinted at a bright future even as a freshman. He averaged 10.4 points and just under 4 rebounds in just 24 minutes per game in his only year at the University.

The Hawks saw him averaging 8.9 points per game his rookie season and he showcased potential with clutch performances, including game-winning shots in notably wild finishes.

That includes this 180 reverse turnaround against the Chicago Bulls with just 0.5 seconds remaining on the clock.

However, AJ Griffin’s trajectory took an unexpected turn when his playing time and subsequently his stats were diminished significantly during the 2023-2024 season.

Griffin was traded to the Houston Rockets in the summer of 2024, only to reach a contract buyout shortly thereafter.

Griffin Receives Some Words Of Support From A Former Teammate

Dejounte Murray, who likewise was a first-round NBA draft pick and a former teammate of AJ Griffin in Atlanta, shared his thoughts on the retirement decision.

“Love YOU Always Bro!” Murray, now a member of the New Orleans Pelicans, wrote. “Forever With You!”

Griffin’s retirement from the NBA to pursue a life of ministry might be unconventional in the sports narrative but stands as a testament to his faith.

His journey reminds us that for some, life’s playbook includes chapters that lead them away from the spotlight of arenas to the quieter but just as important arenas of faith and service.

Congratulations to him on this life-altering pursuit.
