When is a $180 million gamble worth taking?
The time is now for Sacramento Kings point guard De’Aaron Fox.
Fox was eligible for a three-year extension worth $165 million under terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, tacking on the extra years to his maximum-level rookie contract.
In July 2025, Fox can already jump his salary to $57.25 million per season or a maximum of $229 million over four years.
According to ESPN, Fox is pausing contract talks and taking an even bigger step back to think about where he might be if selected to an All-NBA Team or wins the NBA MVP Award.
A super-max extension comes into play at that point, which would make Fox eligible for a five-year contract valued at $345 million. Fox was All-NBA Third Team and also made the All-Star Game for the first time in 2023.
At 26, Fox averaged a career-high 26.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in 2023-24, when he also tallied 5.6 assists per game.
The fifth pick in the 2017 draft out of Kentucky, Fox played 74 games last season and was named the winner of the first ever Clutch Player of the Year award.
