The NBA legend LeBron James has announced a new career move that will have him joining the likes of Tom Brady.
Indeed, Daily Mail has confirmed that James, 40, is the latest sporting icon to become a team owner in the UIM E1 World Championship.
If you’re wondering what the heck that is, it’s the world of really, really fast boats.
James Joins The E1 Circuit
The E1 circuit is the world’s first and only all-electric raceboat series. On Saturday, James will officially become part of the fleet with “Team AlUla Championed by LeBron James” in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. James will be joining the likes of Brady, Rafael Nadal, and Didier Drogba.
“As a lifelong fan of sports and competition, the opportunity to own an E1 team that represents such a high level of innovation in sports is incredibly exciting,” James said.
“E1 is a new type of global competition that’s revolutionizing water racing and I’m proud to be at the forefront of its expansion in season two,” he later added.
James’ Team AlUla is named after the ancient oasis city in Saudi Arabia. The team is set to be fronted by two pilots. The first is the Canadian powerboat racer Rusy Wyatt. The second is Catie Munnings, who is the UK’s first female Red Bull motorsports athlete. During the inaugural season of E1 in 2024, Munnings raced for Team Brazil, who finished fifth in the standings.
Of course, you’re still wondering, “OK, but what the heck is it??”
It’s this!
Look at those things. They look like they’re from the future. And folks, we weren’t kidding: they are fast. Like 100mph fast. So fast that water turns to concrete.

E1 CEO Responds
Rodi Basso, CEO and co-founder of E1, released a statement of his own celebrating James joining the fleet.
“As E1 prepares for a second season that will deliver new teams, more iconic race locations, and more thrilling on-water action, it’s with immense pride and excitement that I welcome Team AlUla and LeBron to the Championship,” Basso said.
“In both of them we have found like-minded partners who will join us on our journey to take E1 to the next level and beyond,” he continued.
Meanwhile, Alejandro Agag, chairman and co-founder of E1, gave his own thoughts on James stepping up to take part.
“We are thrilled to welcome LeBron James and Team AlUla to the UIM E1 World Championship,” he said. “With LeBron’s championship pedigree and history of excellence in globally celebrated sports, his entry into E1 sets the stage for an incredibly competitive and high-energy season on the water.”

‘Not Just About Racing…’
“Having a roster of team owners that includes some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment elevates the Championship to an unparalleled level of prestige,” he added. “This is not just about racing; it’s about a gathering of icons redefining what’s possible in water sports. With new teams, innovative technology, and iconic race destinations, the 2025 season represents an exciting evolution of E1.”
James is replacing the Sergio Perez E1 Team. The season kicks off in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday. There will then be seven races this season all over the world. Locations for these races include Doha, Monaco, Lake Como, and Miami.
This is certainly an interesting career move for James that few would have seen coming. Only time will tell if he can replicate the success he’s had with the Lakers with Team AlUla!
