Would you pay thousands of dollars for this ultra-rare set featuring the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year?

Topps announced Tuesday that it’s releasing Topps Mercury: Victor Wembanyama next month. The price comes in at $8,000 per hobby box.

“An out-of-this-world specimen streaking through the sky, gathering global acclaim in the process… 2023-24 Topps Mercury: Victor Wembanyama has officially landed!” Topps wrote. “This high-end trading card product commemorates Victor Wembanyama’s rookie season dominance with an unprecedented collection of Chromium autographs, inscriptions and game-worn memorabilia from the 2023/24 season.”

These exclusive boxes contain eight cards that are encased in a plastic magnetic case and sealed in a labeled foil wrap.

Each $8,000 box will contain:

  • One autograph relic card numbered /99 or lower. These relics include game-worn jersey patches from Wemby’s rookie season, including his debut and 1,000th career point game. Descriptions of the game-worn relic date and game will be included on the back of every card.
  • One Chromium autograph card numbered /99 or lower. Some of the auto cards will include inscriptions.
  • Two Chromium base cards.
  • Three Chromium base parallel cards numbered /99 or lower.
  • One Chromium insert card numbered /99 or lower.

The set will also include the first-ever dual autograph of Wembanyama and LeBron James, which are just limited to six copies. Wemby also has dual autos with Shaquille O’Neal, C.J. Stroud, David Robinson, Tony Parker, and Jason Kidd that are numbered to /10 or less.

Collectors covet Victor Wembanyama cards

Wemby has been a darling in the collecting community since the San Antonio Spurs drafted him first overall in 2023. Wembanyama’s most-expensive card to date is his 2023 Panini Prizm Black Shimmer FOTL 1/1, graded PSA 9, which sold for $516,000. Jared Bleznick, founder of Blez Sports Cards, has offered $1 million for Wembanyama’s 2023-24 Topps Chrome Basketball Rookie Autograph Superfractor 1/1.
