Hall of Famer Charles Barkley hijacked a feel-good human-interest segment on UConn star Alex Karaban’s family to deliver an unsolicited lecture on immigration during Sunday’s CBS broadcast of March Madness.

As per usual with Sir Charles, he almost got it right, but couldn’t quite stick the landing.

The piece highlighted how Karaban’s mother, Olga, arrived from Ukraine with her parents and grandparents in 1996, while his father, Alexei, came from Belarus on a work visa in 2001.

Barkley began by praising the legal immigrants’ story before pivoting into a broader political rant that turned prime-time college basketball into another platform for dopey celebrity activism.

Typical of celebrities who know little about the real world, Charles’ rant showed a glaring problem—he seems to understand the difference between legal and illegal immigration, but then can’t distinguish between the two cognitively when it comes to enforcing the law.

“I love that kid and his family, but the way some of these other immigrants are getting treated in our country right now is a travesty and a disgrace. I think there’s a difference between amazing immigrants and criminal immigrants,” Barkley said. “I think what’s going on in our country, what we’re doing to some of these amazing immigrants, is really unfortunate, and it’s really sad.”

Sir Charles Barkley praises legal immigrant family story on CBS March Madness broadcast, admits difference between “amazing immigrants” and “criminal immigrants” — then calls current U.S. enforcement a “travesty and a disgrace” anyway

In reality, what’s really sad is that people this ignorant are given a platform to say nonsense like this.

Rather than celebrate the rule of law, or the fact that the UConn player’s parents followed the rules, or call for securing the border against the criminals he just acknowledged, Barkley immediately turned his fire on current enforcement efforts to protect American communities.

“And that’s a great immigrant story. We have a lot of great immigrant stories out there that their stories need to be told, but some of the stuff that’s happening to immigrants in our country right now is really unfortunate, and it’s really unfair,” he continued, blathering on. “But immigrants built this country, and we should admire them and respect them.”

This is dumb. Even by Barkley’s already super-low standards. Because he offered no specific examples of “amazing immigrants” being mistreated, while simultaneously ignoring the record border chaos that brought in the non-amazing immigrants.

He also ignored the fentanyl deaths and crime waves tied to illegal crossings that have dominated headlines for years—once again proving that even when sports analysts try to sound reasonable, the left-wing script still wins out on national television.

Barkley is a mouthpiece for leftists who are okay with the fact that for every Mr. and Mrs. Karaban, there are two or three thugs coming in and harming the American people.
