Michigan offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore will be suspended for this week’s season-opening game as part of the university’s self-imposed penalties for violating NCAA rules, the same ones that also led to coach Jim Harbaugh’s punishment.

Harbaugh, 59, was originally suspended for three games by the school as part of a self-imposed penalty after the NCAA served the program with a draft notice of allegations of four Level II violations and a more-serious Level I violation related to recruiting efforts in 2020. That last bit was Harbaugh’s violation alone, reportedly for “misleading” NCAA investigators after the fact.

But now, the Michigan offensive coordinator will also join Harbaugh in facing the music… and it won’t be “The Victors“.

Moore will be replaced by one of the team’s offensive analysts for the Wolverines kickoff contest against East Carolina on Saturday, according to a statement from Harbaugh. The Pirates will come into Ann Arbor in a match-up where #2 Michigan is heavily favored.

Sherrone Moore is a former offensive lineman for Oklahoma, having played for the Sooners from 2006-2007. He became the leader of the Michigan offense after originally joining the team as its tight ends coach back in 2018. Following his own suspension, he will return to act as the interim head coach during Harbaugh’s absence.

The suspension is due to alleged recruiting violations during the COVID-19 “dead period.” Harbaugh informed his team of the suspension on Monday afternoon. He will return for Michigan’s Week 4 game against Rutgers on September 23.
Before joining Michigan, Harbaugh had both a successful playing and coaching career in the NFL. He spent 15 seasons playing quarterback in the NFL with the Bears, Colts, Chargers, Ravens, and Panthers, mostly as a backup. He also guided the San Francisco 49ers to Super Bowl LIV, before eventually falling to the Kansas City Chiefs, 31-20. He has posted a 74-25 record during his nine seasons at the helm in Michigan.
