Bill Belichick is not a first ballot Hall of Famer. It still seems absurd to say out loud. Bill Belichick, he who has eight Super Bowl rings, one for each finger, sans thumbs, is not a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Now, speaking publicly about the Hall of Fame snub, Belichick downplayed the controversy and made it clear his attention remains squarely on building the North Carolina football program.
“I’m focused on coaching this team and focused on getting Carolina football to the highest level I can. That’s what I’ve always… I focus about what I can do, and things that are not in my control, I don’t worry about,” he told reporters.
It was a nice, measured response. Vintage Hoodie, by the way. Probably not all that honest. Giving the public absolutely nothing. You know he has to be enraged.

Belichick Downplays Hall of Fame Snub as Focus Shifts to North Carolina
Despite his record eight Super Bowl victories—two as an assistant and six as head coach of the New England Patriots—Belichick fell short of the required votes in his first year of eligibility.
The sleight prompted widespread debate and criticism from figures across the sports world. Rightly so. And the reporters or voters who decided not to make him a first ballot HOFer should be stripped of their vote from now until eternity.
The 2026 inductees announced at NFL Honors, by the way, included Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Luke Kuechly, Adam Vinatieri, and Roger Craig. As great as these players were, not one of them belongs in the Hall before Belichick.
I suppose it’s the kind of response from Belichick you’d hope for if you’re the North Carolina program. You’ve shelled out millions to bring in one of the all-time great coaches, so you want him to be super-focused. Granted, you know that’s not really the case since he brought a circus into town with his girlfriend, who is almost half a century younger than him. But you get the point.
Still, part of me wants him to just come out and say, ‘These people are weapons-grade morons. All of them.’

Entering his second season at North Carolina, Belichick and the Tar Heels are poised for greater stability and continuity after a challenging 4-8 debut in 2025. At least they believe so.
Coach is emphasizing that the program now has its core roster largely in place and will benefit from a full year of development through spring practice. And he’s expressing optimism for improvement despite a tougher 2026 schedule that includes 11 teams coming off winning seasons.
Whether or not they should be optimistic remains to be seen. The improvement and uber-focused aspect, anyway. The circus with Jordon Hudson will still be ever-present. As will speculation about Belichick trying to get back in the NFL.
Can he begin to cultivate a Hall of Fame career in college coaching next? Time will tell.
