Most people know that O.J. Simpson was a very accomplished running back in the NFL. But I’m willing to bet even more people know him for other things – killing his wife (allegedly), killing a waiter (allegedly), fleeing the police in a white Ford Bronco, ending up in prison for stealing his own sports memorabilia, to name a few.

Not many people would take that body of work and, when commenting on him, utter the phrase “God rest his soul.”

But not everybody is Cam Newton.

Newton, a former NFL star in his own right, stumbled seriously when trying to discuss the Buffalo Bills‘ dominance over the Pittsburgh Steelers this past weekend.

The Bills set a record for rushing yards on the Steelers’ home turf, racking up 249 yards on the ground. Cam being Cam, he had a unique way of describing things.

Cam Newton with the O.J. Simpson remark

Cam Newton, making his regular appearances on First Take with Stephen A. Smith, reminded football fans that a Bills running back hasn’t performed that well on the field since Orenthal.

By “regular appearance,” we mean he was dressed in his usual flamboyant outfit. Newton always looks like a rival chocolatier to Willy Wonka. But it wasn’t his outfit that sparked controversy. It was his comments.

“The last person to put up this much yards, God rest his soul, was O. J. Simpson, respectfully,” Newton said. His co-host simply nodded along to the ridiculous comment.

Simpson, as was mentioned, is best known for the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman.

The former running, who is also well-known for having been acquitted of the murders mentioned above, passed away last April after a battle with prostate cancer.

While “The Juice” got off scot-free in the criminal trial, a subsequent civil trial in 1997 found Simpson liable for the wrongful deaths of Nicole Brown and Goldman. He was ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages to the victims’ families.

In short, his soul ain’t “resting” anywhere.

Viewers were a bit outraged

Shockingly, ESPN viewers weren’t thrilled that Cam Newton honored one of the most notorious people in the history of sports.

“‘God rest his soul’… for allegedly murdering the mother of his children and the waiter at the restaurant, but damn, he knew how to pound the rock,” a lawyer wrote on X. “Is this guy serious?!?! Respectfully.”

He’s probably serious.

Another quipped, “OJ soul ain’t resting. Probably a bit warmer where he’s at.”

Yeah, the odds of that are pretty high. Like Cam Newton must have been for saying something so inane.

“Stop putting this idiot on television and behind a microphone,” another fan wrapped, though that statement could apply to any number of personalities on ESPN.

This is definitely one of the dumbest things Cam has ever said on camera, rivaled only by his take last year that the WNBA was poised to surpass Major League Baseball in popularity.

“Baseball is like a — I hate to say — a dying sport,” Newton claimed. “I think baseball will be surpassed by WNBA in 20 years. Baseball isn’t being played by Americans anymore.”

“For those who take offense to it, this is just the truth. It’s like, who’s really paying attention to baseball?”

The WNBA might not even be around in 20 years.

Baseball will be.

An average of 51 million viewers watched Game 7 of this year’s World Series in the U.S., Canada, and Japan combined. You’d be lucky to find 51 people total who watched a WNBA game all of last season.
