Despite winning the NFC East, Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy still hasn’t been guaranteed to return next year by Jerry Jones
Jerry Jones is easily the most high-profile owner in the NFL. He’s not only the guy who signs the checks, he’s also the Cowboys’ general manager, spokesman, and the face of the franchise. So, coming off a season where his team clinched the NFC East title and the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs, you would think he would be outwardly pleased with the performance of head coach Mike McCarthy. Unfortunately, Jones just isn’t that easy to impress.
A Big Year In Big D
Dallas finished off the regular season with an impressive 12-5 record and were unbeaten at home, going 8-0 at Jerry World. With McCarthy engineering the offense, Dak Prescott made a case to be the NFL’s MVP, and CeeDee Lamb set franchise receiving records. They rallied ahead of last year’s Super Bowl runner-up, the Philadelphia Eagles, to position themselves for a powerful postseason push.
However, when asked if that guarantees coach McCarthy will return to Big D for the 2024 campaign, Jerry Jones is non-committal. When questioned recently, his response was a casual, “We’ll see how each game goes.”
As Clarence Hill Jr. of The Forth Worth Star-Telegram wrote on Sunday: “When asked directly about Mike McCarthy’s Cowboys future, owner Jerry Jones said ‘we’ll see how each game goes’ in the playoffs,”

Could The Coach Get Canned By The Cowboys?
It’s been acknowledged by many NFL insiders that McCarthy’s tenuous position hinges on how he performs right now, not in the regular season.
“If the Cowboys play well in the postseason, McCarthy would have an excellent chance to keep his job,” ESPN analyst Adam Schefter wrote on Saturday, even before the ‘Boys Week 18 win. “But if they struggle and end the season with an embarrassing loss, as has happened in each of the past two years, then some say that change could come to Dallas.”
The Cowboys will face the wild-card Green Bay Packers (9-8) in the first round of the playoffs. One has to wonder… if Dallas loses, could it be Mike McCarthy’s final game on the sidelines for The Star?
