Let me tell you something about Green Bay, Wisconsin – affectionately known as the Frozen Tundra or Titletown, USA.
Cheeseheads drink. A lot. Like, a lot-a lot. How much?
Seven out of the top 10 drunkest cities in America are in America’s Dairyland. And sure enough you guessed it: Green Bay is the drunkest city in all our fair land. All this with a bar close time of 2 a.m.
For the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, Green Bay wants to extend those hours to 4 a.m.

Prepare Yourself, Geebsers
For a people who treat drinking like a sport (or like breathing), this is big news. For just a little more background, consider how tiny Green Bay is. The population is 100,000. Reportedly, over 700,000 made the trip to Detroit for this year’s NFL Draft.
Can GB expect that many? Maybe even more, considering legendary Lambeau Field is the singular must-see NFL sports venue?
It’s these considerations that have the city council looking for permission from the state to extend the bar hours. And only for the NFL Draft. We’re drunk, not crazy.
Alderman Brian Johnson makes the case: “We recognize that once that bar time hits you’re going to potentially push everybody out into the street at 2 a.m. because they can’t remain in those facilities, and then they have no transportation to be able to bring them back to their hotels or their lodging, so we want to be able to create a larger window.”
Johnson has been working with the Tavern League to figure out that transportation aspect, too. Let me tell you, there aren’t enough Ubers or Safe Rides for 700,000 people. Yet.

Not Everyone On Board
State Rep. David Steffen, who represents the stadium district, might have a bit of cold water to pour on the situation.
Expressing unspoken concerns about drunken hoodlums running roughshod over our fair city, told Fox, “Squeeze an extra two hours on bar time, I’m not sure if that’s a good idea. I’m looking forward to more discussion and in particular, again, getting reassurance from the law enforcement community that they are okay with this expansion of hours.”
In order to actually extend the bar hours, the local municipalities would need permission from our state overlords in Madison.
Your hometown correspondent believes the hours will be extended, and everything will go off without a hitch. As for the total number of visitors? There’s no way you can cram 700,000 people in here. But we’re sure going to try.
