Although they won Super Bowl LVIII in February, it’s been a rough offseason for Kansas City Chiefs players. Whether it’s arrests or controversial takes, the Chiefs have been in the news seemingly every week. Now it’s Isaiah Buggs’ turn.

According to court documents filed in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Buggs has been accused of animal cruelty.

Buggs, 27, is facing misdemeanor charges due to a public complaint regarding leaving his two dogs on the back porch without providing any access to food or water.

The civil petition states that animal control officers arrived at a scene involving a grey and white pitbull left isolated on a screened-in back porch with feces surrounding the area. No food or water was nearby.

Respondents also located a black Rottweiler mix locked up in a metal cage in direct sunlight, with no access to food or water.

The three dogs were removed from the property due to being “malnourished, emaciated, and neglected.” From what the officers on scene observed, Buggs’ property was abandoned, at least at that time. A nearby neighbor noted that the dogs had been on the porch for ‘at least 10 days.’

Buggs reportedly moved out of the house around March 19, nine days before officers arrived to rescue the dogs. The pitbull was later euthanized after failing heartworm treatment and becoming increasingly aggressive. The Rottweiler tested positive for the highly contagious Parvovirus and weighed just 52 pounds, but is still in the care of the Tuscaloosa animal shelter.

A court ruling will determine whether Buggs will ever be allowed to own other animals again. Buggs is facing two misdemeanor counts of second-degree animal cruelty. The Louisiana native is set to enter his sixth NFL season and is still on the Chiefs’ roster despite not making an appearance in any games for Kansas City last season.
