Michigan University announced plans to sell alcohol inside the Big House this season. And there was much rejoicing throughout the land.
Not just for sports reporters who are practically salivating over the potential of absolute chaos at Wolverine games. But naturally for their rabid fans. Eat, drink, be merry.
Alas, the joy was delivered a mighty blow when reports surfaced that the price of beers at the stadium would cost a pretty penny.
Well, 1,225 pretty pennies to be exact. That’s typically 1,000 more than your average college student has on hand.
Alejandro Zúñiga, a reporter for Michigan Insider, revealed the outrageous prices, as well as the availability of alcohol on game day.
“Alcohol at Michigan Stadium will start at $12.25 for a 16 ounce domestic beer, I’m told. They’ll have 5 local craft beers + other macro options,” he said on X. “Alcohol sales will start 1 hour before kickoff and end at the start of the fourth quarter.”

Michigan Alcohol Sales Prices Are Insane
Now, obviously not every fan in the stadium is a student at Michigan. (It’s called the Big House because it’s really, really big. Biggest in America, as a matter of fact.) But a pretty hefty chunk of them are.
College kids about to drown in a lifetime of student debt, who fuel all-night study cram sessions with cold pizza and an endless supply of Ramen, aren’t going to be shelling out $13 per beer.
Nothing like flipping a middle finger to the kids whose college tuition helps fund that stadium and the football program itself.
Fans on social media pretty much gave Michigan the finger right back.
“Pass, I’ll continue to smuggle it in with me,” one person wrote.
A fan helpfully comparison-shopped, saying, “That’s more expensive than Disney World where I’m paying the low low price of $9.25 for a domestic beer.”
“Pass,” another added. “I’ll still bring my water bottle filled with vodka in lol”

How High Is Too High?
Granted, alcohol sales at Michigan games is a win for the common man. But I don’t think the common man wants to shell out for one beer what he could pay at the grocery store for a 12 pack.
Seriously Wolverine football, do better.
Wisconsin University also announced alcohol sales at their football games this season. They currently sell beer at basketball and hockey home games for just under $10 each.
Even that seems too high, and yet Michigan inflated that by about $3.
Maybe they’ll have a 10-cent beer night at the Big House. I’ve heard those promotions can be very, very successful.
