North Carolina football head coach (man, that still seems weird to type) Bill Belichick has a uniquely interesting proposal. He wants the Lombardi trophy to be named after the guy who has won it the most.
Belichick offered up the unsolicited advice on the “Let’s Go!” podcast with Jim Gray this week. During their conversation, he admitted it’s the players who do more to win championships than coaches.
“Those are guys that won the games, man,” he revealed. “I didn’t make any tackles. I didn’t make any kicks. That was [Adam] Vinatieri that made that kick in four inches of snow.”
“You got to have good players, and as a coach, you want to give your players a chance to win.”
Gray, though, countered that the Lombardi trophy is named after a coach for a reason. And specifically, that coach.
Bill Belichick Says It Should Be The Brady Trophy
Gray noted that the trophy handed over to the winner of the Super Bowl was not named after the Green Bay Packers quarterback at the time, it was named after their legendary coach.
“They don’t name it the Starr Trophy. They name it the Lombardi Trophy,” he quipped.
While it’s likely Bill Belichick was just joking, his response was yet another example of his emphasis that players win championships more so than coaches.
“Maybe they should name it the Brady Trophy,” the coach told Gray. “He won seven of them.”

Renaming The Lombardi Trophy
And here we thought Bill Belichick was becoming cool, what with his ‘Instaface‘ posts and his cheerleader girlfriend. But naming the Lombardi trophy the Brady trophy? Not cool, bro.
The Super Bowl trophy is named after Vince Lombardi because of his significant contributions to the sport of football, particularly his success as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers.
Lombardi led the Packers to wins in the first two Super Bowls in 1967 and 1968. His teams had unprecedented success, with a record of 96-34-6 in the regular season and 9-1 in the postseason during his tenure.
The Packers, before the Super Bowl era, pulled off not one, but two three-peats – one of which came under Vince Lombardi’s tutelage.
And his success came at a pivotal time when the NFL was merging with the American Football League (AFL). His victories in the first championship games helped establish the league’s dominance and the significance of the championship game, which was renamed the Super Bowl after the first one.
Yes, Brady won a whole bunch – six alongside Belichick and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – but it’s about the history, man. It might not be long before Patrick Mahomes has an argument to have the trophy named after him.
There’ll always be somebody else down the line, too. Let’s keep the Lombardi trophy as is. And you stick to recruiting for the Tarheels.
