Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield recently dropped some epic knowledge about how his faith has shaped his life and career, particularly through a humbling lesson from God.
In a recent interview, Mayfield shared that after facing challenges and uncertainties—such as his rocky tenure with the Cleveland Browns and subsequent moves to the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams—he learned to trust in a higher plan.
That plan actually began off the gridiron.
“[God] had to take my career down to the studs and make me realize I am more than a football player. There’s much more going on than the game of football,” said Mayfield on the latest Sports Spectrum podcast. “For me to see that, I had to hit rock bottom.”
The NFL veteran, now heading into his ninth season, was also very open about personal struggles he’s had to navigate with the help of God, including marriage struggles.
"For me to see that, I had to hit rock bottom."

Baker Mayfield On Advice To Younger Players Regarding Faith
Baker Mayfield’s story resonates as a testament to personal growth, blending his on-field success with an off-field journey of spiritual reflection, which has endeared him further to fans.
And he wants to share his faith with younger players in the league. Here’s what he would tell those players.
“I’d say that Jesus is obviously the Son of God, but is Grace, is perfection,” Mayfield opened up. “Somebody that sacrificed everything, that gave us this opportunity to live life.”
“Proclaim it whenever you can. He’s the reason we’re here.”
“When you accept that Grace – that – it’s an unbelievable feeling that then you dive into the word, and you see the stories and the scripture backs up what you’re saying,” added the two-time Pro Bowler.
Jesus is the son of God… When you say he’s your Lord & Savior, you proclaim it wherever you can… [The Bible] is the truth.”

Baker’s Resurgence
Baker Mayfield credited his 2023 resurgence with the Buccaneers, where he threw for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns, to this newfound perspective, saying adversity taught him resilience and gratitude.
He excelled even further the following season, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns. All-Pro, MVP-level stuff.
Mayfield was drafted first overall by the Cleveland Browns in 2018. He quickly made a name for himself by leading the team to their first playoff win in 26 years in 2020, though his tenure there ended after a turbulent 2021 season.
He was traded to the Carolina Panthers and then picked up on waivers by the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, both stints that were rather unspectacular.
His success as Tom Brady’s successor in Tampa Bay was immediate the following year. He led the team to an NFC South title and victory in the Wild Card round against the defending Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia Eagles.
