Seattle Seahawks’ veteran quarterback Geno Smith on Sunday secured a significant financial boost despite the team’s failure to reach the playoffs.
Smith led Seattle to a victory against the Los Angeles Rams, 30-25. This game, this win was crucial on a personal financial level as it allowed Smith to meet three separate contract escalators, earning him an additional $6 million.
Those milestones he had to achieve:
- 10 wins.
- 4,282 passing yards.
- Completion percentage of 69.7555%.
By game’s end, he had achieved all three. Seattle won their 10th game of the season, and Smith finished with 4,320 yards and a completion percentage over 70%.
Imagine the pressure!
Geno Smith Gets A Big Bonus
Granted, it’s nice to fatten the bank account. But Geno Smith was more focused on winning the game, something that earned praise from Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald.
“He was like, I just want to go win,” Macdonald said, according to ESPN. “That’s all he cared about. He was awesome all week. I’ll keep our conversations private but he was great, man.
“He was awesome. Awesome. All his focus all week was just going out the right way and getting a 10th win.”
Seattle had already been eliminated from playoff contention before they took the field. But Smith wasn’t about to mail it in. He threw a very efficient 223 yards, completing over 74% of his passes, and had four touchdowns.
Although the numbers are ever-creeping upwards as a trend, completion percentages over 70% are no joke.

Redemption
Geno Smith’s tenure with the Seattle Seahawks has been a quiet one of redemption after being much-maligned by New York Jets fans during his four seasons there.
In the three years he’s played in Seattle, the team has been over .500 each season. They made the playoffs with a 9-8 record in 2022, losing in the Wild Card game to the San Francisco 49ers.
Smith that year was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year, throwing for 4,282 yards with 30 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions.
Geno has one more year left on his contract, for which he will be owed $14.8 million. He’ll be eligible for a contract extension but wasn’t keen to discuss the matter after the Rams game.
“Those are things that I’ll talk to the people I need to talk to about,” he said. “I appreciate the question, but I like to keep a lot of things internal, in-house, with respects to everybody involved. I think it’s the best way to do it.”
