On Sunday afternoon, I went from feeling pure joy to pure heartbreak in a matter of 54 seconds. It had looked as if my Green Bay Packers were going to beat the Chicago Bears for the 12th straight time. Until they didn’t.
As you may remember, I have a long-running bet with my mom, a Bears superfan. Earlier this year, I was up.
Now? Way, way down.
54 Seconds – From Glory to Pain
Green Bay took a 22-21 lead on a 55 yard field goal with 54 seconds left. Game over, right? Wrong. The Packers have a tendency to make any quarterback look like Peyton Manning, and that’s exactly what happened next.
The Bears got the ball back and instead of a sack, a penalty was called on Packers linebacker Kingsley Enagbare for a horse collar tackle.
Chicago got 15 free yards and a first down. Bears quarterback Caleb Williams then led a methodical drive to cross midfield with under 30 seconds to go. The biggest play came on a third and 11 when they had to have it. An easy completion over the middle of the field from Williams to wide receiver DJ Moore set up the Bears in field goal range.
Just like in week six, it would come down to a kick to win the game. This time, the kick was good. A pin could be heard dropping at Lambeau Field.
But my pain had only just started.
Aftermath
Just like that, the 11 game losing streak for the Bears against the Packers had come to an end. More importantly however, it was the first time in five years that I had lost the wager between my mom and I.
So now I must pay up my end of the bargain and wear Chicago Bears gear this entire week. It has not gone well. Packer fans, I apologize and ask for your forgiveness.
Yours truly even called into the Chicago Bears postgame show on ESPN 1000 and had to swallow my pride and acknowledge how poorly the Packers played. Take a listen.
Oh, but that’s not all, either. No – part of the bet includes touring Chicago in this gear. In public.
Enjoy this victory Bears fans. This could be the last one against Green Bay for a while. Again.
