Brett Favre: NFL No Longer Appeals to True Fans

Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre accused the NFL of no longer prioritizing its core, dedicated fanbase, suggesting there has been a noticeable change in direction over the past decade or more.

The former Green Bay Packers quarterback, known for his gunslinger style during his playing days, shared his views during a recent appearance on Tomi Lahren’s “OutKick” show.

Favre agreed with Lahren’s observation that the league’s appeal has shifted, particularly noting that the change may trace back to events surrounding former quarterback Colin Kaepernick‘s protests.

“I think there probably is some truth to that. Why that has changed, I really don’t know,” the Super Bowl champ said. “Because I think your general football audience is people like you and I. Maybe loves football, or maybe is a casual, fair-weather fan, but it is the biggest show in town.”

“So you watch it, you know, you watch the halftime show and who sang the national anthem. You know, that’s been that way for a long time.”

“But you’re right, you know, in the last maybe 10 years, maybe a little longer, there’s been a slight shift. For whatever reason, I have no idea, because you want to appeal to your true fans,” he added. “And it doesn’t seem like that is the case anymore.”

Favre’s comments come amid ongoing debates about the league’s entertainment choices and cultural messaging.

The remarks follow recent criticism of the Super Bowl halftime performance by Bad Bunny, which was largely in Spanish and drew backlash from some conservative voices, including former President Donald Trump, who called it disappointing and disconnected from traditional American audiences.

Favre, like Trump, was clearly not a big fan of having the controversial rapper as the halftime entertainment at Super Bowl LX.

During an appearance on his “4th & Favre” podcast prior to the big game, the former three-time league MVP offered up some alternative choices for the show, while also taking a subtle jab at Mr. Bunny, real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, and his alleged lack of patriotism.

“I’d pick someone who — maybe Jason Aldean… someone who loves this country and that everyone could relate to,” Favre said when asked what he would do if he were Commissioner Roger Goodell. “I think Jason Aldean right now is as big a patriot and has a great voice.”

“I like George Strait, that’s old school,” Favre added. “There are a lot of choices out there.”

Real football fans have been clamoring for Metallica for years. When are we going to get those legends? The NFL isn’t interested in entertaining fans anymore; they want to draw in people who view the Super Bowl as pure entertainment or a holiday, an excuse to party.
