It’s barely beyond Black Monday and already there are murmurs about the depths of Black Monday, the label applied to the day after the NFL regular season ends when many teams issue pink slips to coaches who won’t be back.
In-season firings assure at least three jobs are open for candidates – NFL rules stipulate multiple interviews must take place and include minority candidates – who dare to take the wheel of turnaround missions.
But not all vacancies are created equal.
Here’s a look at the best available, or likely to be available, jobs in the NFL in January:
1. Chicago Bears (open)
CEO and president Kevin Warren might’ve fumbled the firing of Matt Eberflus the day after Thanksgiving, but he’s right in his measured assessment the Bears have the most coveted and attractive job available.
The cap situation is stable to strong. There’s young and emerging talent on either side of the ball. And the all-important QB position is no longer a Chitown riddle.
2. Dallas Cowboys (likely to be open)
I know, we know, it’s Jerry’s World and he will mess it up. But the Cowboys are a veritable All-Star team if only the money can be found to keep the crew together. Next in line is pass rusher demon Micah Parsons. This was a 12-win division champ last year and Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Trevon Diggs are signed long-term.
3. Las Vegas Raiders (likely to be open)
Maybe Mark Davis won’t want to pay the piper or the Pierce. But Antonio Pierce, retained rather than Davis hiring Jim Harbaugh for $100 million, has been a dud compared to his stint as interim head coach.
If Pierce is canned, consider the Raiders are in very good shape with the salary cap and could have a top five draft pick to entice a coach that hikes the excitement level in Las Vegas. Having Tom Brady as a minority owner won’t hurt in that regard.
4. New York Giants (likely to be open)
The final tune of the Ballad of Daniel Jones leaves the front office to reckon with what went wrong, including the finely paved road that helped Saquon Barkley stroll to division rival Philadelphia in free agency.
5. New Orleans Saints
Darren Rizzi scored a pair of wins in his first two games as interim head coach. We wouldn’t want to stick around to sort out the salary cap hell the Saints are trying to survive.
